Systolic Time Intervals in Ischemic Heart Disease

Abstract
A study of systolic time intervals was made in 20 cases of ischemic heart disease with 20 healthy adults serving as a control. The patient group consisted of eight cases of angina pectoris and 12 cases of old myocardial infarction, and none of whom were hypertensive or in congestive heart failure. In the patient group, with the exception of left ventricular ejection time (LVET), all the systolic time intervals, particularly electromechanical systole, mechanical systole and pre-ejection period (PEP) were significantly prolonged. It was also noted that the ratio of PEP/LVET was significantly increased and that of LVET/ICT. significantly decreased. Thes differences between the patient group and the control were largely caused by the prolongation of isovolumic contraction time (ICT) in the former. This feat suggests that the myocardial contractillity
is decreased in ischemic heart diseases even in the absence of heart failure.
